vi|rus «VY ruhs», noun.
1. any one of a group of substances that cause certain infectious diseases. Viruses are composed of protein and nucleic acid. They are smaller than ordinary bacteria and cannot be seen through most microscopes. They are dependent upon living tissue for their reproduction and growth. Most viruses are filterable and cause such diseases in man as rabies, polio, chicken pox, and the common cold.

3. the poison produced in a person or animal suffering from an infectious disease.
4. the venom emitted by a poisonous animal.
5. Figurative. something that poisons the mind or morals; corrupting influence: »

the virus of prejudice.
